Discipleship

Jesus said to his followers – “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” Matthew 28 19-20.

By discipling, our aim is to help new believers or Christians young in the faith, to develop a Christian mind, and encourage Christian living so that they are prepared for the challenges that will face them in the future, and be able to engage with friends and neighbours who do not know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

We see it as a church responsibility not an individual responsibility and not something to be left to keen members of the fellowship.

So our ‘Discovering’ Course, outlined below has developed.

It now comprises ten units.

Discovering God – an overview of God’s work towards saving his people.

Discovering Discipleship – What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in the 20th Century?

Discovering Salvation – What do we mean by a ‘fallen world?’ What is sin? Why do I need saving?

Discovering the Unseen World – Is there really anything other than us in this universe? Trusting the Bible to give us insights into the unseen realities.

Discovering the Holy Spirit – Who is the Holy Spirit and what impact does He have on our lives as believers?

Discovering Prayer – The why and the how of prayer.

Discovering the Priesthood – through prayer we develop our relationship with God and discover our purposes in His world

Discovering What Happens When We Die. What is beyond this life and how does that future shape us today?

Discovering God’s Global Vision – opening up the challenge of mission today.

Discovering Jesus – the first and last piece of the jigsaw.

Here are some quotes from people who have experienced being taken through the course…

“My knowledge of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit has broadened greatly through being discipled on a 1:1 basis. It has put in place the foundations of my faith, which has enabled me to have a more intimate relationship with God.” – Clare

“My background knowledge about Christ was very limited but I wanted to find out more, I was given the opportunity to explore this at Heaton Moor. I was given 1:1 sessions every week and we worked through material at my own pace. I never felt any pressure to continue – just a hunger to find out more of an understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ.” – Andy.

“The teaching notes and sessions have built up my knowledge and faith in God hugely and the relational aspect has given me a safe place to go with my questions. Thanks to all involved” – Jenny
